Kilnforming - a method of shaping and combining glass in a kiln using controlled heat.

How kilnforming works

Kilnforming starts with flat sheets of glass that are cut, layered, or arranged into a design. These layers are then placed inside a kiln and heated until the glass softens and begins to fuse together. By adjusting the temperature and the length of firing, we can control how much the glass melts, bonds, or changes shape. There are two main kilnforming techniques:

1. Fusing

In fusing, two or more layers of glass are heated until they join into a single solid piece. A full fuse melts the layers completely into a smooth surface. A tack fuse keeps more texture and dimension by partially melting the glass.

2. Slumping

After a piece is fused, it can be reheated and slumped into or over a mold. As the glass softens, it gently takes on the mold’s shape.

Role of the kiln

The kiln’s temperature and timing are programmed for each project. Every firing schedule includes gradual heating and cooling phases to make sure the glass is strong, stable, and free from stress or cracking. This precision gives each piece both durability and a professional finish.
